<\/a>Hubby and I are going \u201call-middle\u201d at the end of June for a whirlwind ukulele tour to Modesto, Sacramento and San Jose. Because of our schedules–Craig<\/a>\u00a0teaches high school and I do shows and teach and write Monday through Monday–well we don\u2019t get out of Los Angeles very much. But when we do, I\u2019m like a wide-eyed kid on her first trip to Disneyland.<\/p>\nThis mini-tour \u201cfell together\u201d because people in the ukulele community are really kind. And supportive.<\/p>\n
For example, we met\u00a0Stu Herreid<\/a>\u00a0at the Reno Ukulele Festival. Stu owns The Strum Shop which is a popular music store\/performing venue near Sacramento. I have attended his festival workshops and marvel at his teaching methods. He is the \u201cstrum master\u201d and above all, Stu\u2019s honest. About the \u201cP<\/strong>\u201d word.<\/p>\n PACTICE\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n I am laughing so hard (well on the inside) that I almost spit up my Ricola because I know I can barely do anything for 45 minutes without running to the fridge or the computer or going off to fantasyland. If you get my drift\u2026<\/p>\n Nevertheless, I completely agree with Mr. Herreird. Practice,\u00a0hard-core repetition<\/em>, is key to learning to play this or any instrument. And truth be told, I\u2019ve done countless \u201cpractice marathons\u201d in my life and\u2026I\u2019m tired.<\/em><\/p>\n Then I remember that my friend and former Skype student, Portor, lives in San Jose and I grab a map of California. \u201cOh San Jose is only \u201ctwo inches\u201d from Sacramento,\u201d I exclaim to no one else in the room. Well, Porter gets to\u00a0work<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0works\u00a0<\/em>miracles. He arranges a\u00a0workshop<\/em>\u00a0and concert for us at Atria Willow Glen and goes above and beyond the call of duty, inviting several local ukulele groups from Silicon Valley to Monterey \u201cto party\u201d with us in San Jose.<\/p>\n And now you see how we put a tour together. <\/a>Suddenly, out of the blue\u2026of my computer screen\u2026I get an email from Lorrie who helms the Funstrummers, based in Modesto. She sees we are performing at The Strum Shop and invites us to do a workshop for her group that same morning. Back to the map I go\u2026 \u201cAh, Modesto is a \u201clittle over an inch\u201d from Sacramento. We can do that!<\/p>\n
