\u2018Tis the season\u2019 for fruit cake, warm hugs, hurry-up-and-get-it-over-with hugs, gifting and re-gifting, making resolutions that won\u2019t last ten minutes past New Years Day, cursing traffic crazies and hanging out with people we don\u2019t usually hang out with. So let\u2019s get real. These holidays can be really stressful. For a lot of people. For a lot of reasons. Can we admit that? Please\u2026<\/p>\n

Rehearsing the big show in our Thursday CC Strummers Class.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Well The CC Strummers and I are going to make it all better. Next week at our Ukulele Holiday Show. Sure we sing\u00a0Jingle Bells<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Mele Kalikimaka<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0I\u2019m Spending Hanukkah in Santa Monica<\/em>\u00a0but we also include what I lovingly call \u201cThe Dysfunctional Family Corner.\u201d I admit this is my idea because it\u2019s a subject I know well\u2014both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n

Come holiday time my emotional radar is exquisitely tuned to \u201ctrouble.\u201d For example, when I\u2019m doing a restaurant gig I put my mouth and fingers on automatic and scan the room for toasty pockets of drama. Like the family at Table 5. They are the very picture of \u201csuffering made visible.\u201d Even the best service and tastiest comfort food, like\u00a0gooey<\/em>\u00a0anything, will not elicit a smile. Then there is the house party in the upscale hilly neighborhood. The happy couple are\u00a0this close<\/em>\u00a0to duking it out as the sushi chefs are setting up in the living room, I\u2019m spreading Christmas sing-a-long books on the piano and \u201cJoy to The World\u201d is wafting through the stereo speakers.<\/p>\n

So The CC Strummers are taking on relationship angst and revenge with our holiday version of\u00a0These Boots Were Made For Walkin’.<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>Tom, our new U-bass player, has been woodshedding mightily with his teacher to learn those iconic bass lines. It\u2019s so cool. And SO cathartic! I feel positively purged of\u00a0yuk<\/em>\u00a0by the time we finish the song. Yes\u00a0Silent Night<\/em>\u00a0is gorgeous.\u00a0Winter Wonderland<\/em>\u00a0a joy.\u00a0Silver Bells<\/em>, ding-a-ling fun. But we also want to tell world that \u201cyou keep lyin\u2019 when you oughta be truthin\u2019\u2026\u201d Okay?<\/p>\n
