I am not a \u201csports\u201d person.\u00a0\u00a0But then something happens, like the\u00a0local\u00a0<\/em>team does good or the\u00a0underdogs<\/em>\u00a0do good or the entire world puts\u00a0angst<\/em> on hold and worships at
\nthe altar of\u00a0👏 G-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-L 👏 \u00a0<\/strong>So I do the Google-Deep Dive<\/em>:\u00a0\u00a0Who are these UCLA women<\/a> basketball players?\u00a0\u00a0Who\u2019s this guy Jalen Brunson<\/a> from the New York Knicks?\u00a0\u00a0As for the 2026 World Cup — inspirational stories<\/a> of gumption and kindness are rolling in.<\/p>\n

🌺<\/p>\n

But something much bigger is happening for me.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Collective Effervescence.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0French sociologist \u00c9mile Durkheim first described this in 1912.\u00a0\u00a0It can feel like an electric energy that brings on a spirit of joy. \u00a0Revelry.\u00a0\u00a0Suddenly we feel a palpable connection-thing<\/em> to each other AND to something bigger than just me and you.\u00a0\u00a0Like at the same time.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0But the magic recipe for this communal stew starts with a group of people who are sharing\u2026a moment.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What kind of moment?\u00a0\u00a0You fill in the blank\u2026<\/p>\n

One of my wise friends told me this story:\u00a0\u00a0Many years ago she attended a large conference which was led by noted psychologist (and trauma specialist) <\/span>Bessel van der Kolk.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0He began his lecture by asking the audience \u2014 three-hundred health care professionals \u2014 <\/span>how many people here sing with a chorus?\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Only a few raised their hands (including my friend).\u00a0\u00a0He asked them to stand up and announced that\u00a0<\/span>they<\/strong>\u00a0were the luckiest people because making music together is one of the most potent ways to heal from trauma.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t need stadium seating to snag a few moments of this out-of-this-world<\/em> feeling. It happens when I put my Zoom classes on \u201cgallery\u201d setting and see everyone at the same time.\u00a0\u00a0It happens when we gather in person to play the ukulele and sing.\u00a0\u00a0It happens with the seniors at my Friday ukulele gig.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThis is the highlight of my whole week,\u201d they say.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s not hyperbole.\u00a0\u00a0I hear this over and over.\u00a0\u00a0And I feel it myself.<\/p>\n

But this bubbly feeling has a short half-life.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve given up trying to hold on to it nor do I get too bummed out when the feeling goes\u00a0poof. <\/em>Soon enough the allstar women of UCLA will be playing\u00a0against<\/em>\u00a0each other at the pros. A few idiots will burn a car rather than hug a human as exuberant fans fill the streets to celebrate\u00a0\u201cThe Knicks in Five.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Something is going to piss you off about the World Cup.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s life\u2026<\/p>\n

The thing is\u2026I think just a whiff of collective effervescence can move \u201cthe dial.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps having an experience like this gets stored in our bodies.\u00a0\u00a0Somehow.\u00a0\u00a0Somewhere.\u00a0\u00a0By tomorrow what is left is a sweet spongy memory.\u00a0\u00a0But just\u00a0remember<\/em>, remembering what is possible\u2026 isn\u2019t that good thing too?<\/p>\n

I have a personal stake in this collective experience\u00a0stuff<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Believe it or not, I am an introvert.\u00a0\u00a0I love quiet and to be alone.\u00a0\u00a0Like many others, I experienced trauma growing up\u2014in the crucible of family and in the wilds of public education.\u00a0\u00a0I felt much safer pushing people away than joining the circle.\u00a0\u00a0But at the same time, life pulled me,\u00a0ever-so-stealthily<\/em>, onward and outward.\u00a0\u00a0It wasn\u2019t until I found myself in other people\u2019s stories, their triumphs and travails that I discovered a sense of community within myself and in my daily life.\u00a0\u00a0For me, it taken a world of people to grow into myself.\u00a0\u00a0A little taste of collective effervescence, now and then, is a joyful byproduct of being an engaged social animal.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m so grateful to land in the ukulele world because, in my opinion, this singular instrument is the very stuff of collective effervesce. \u00a0Why? \u00a0It\u2019s an instrument for everyone. \u00a0It meets you where YOU are. \u00a0There is a huge margin for error because the sounds you make are gone in a flash (there is no sustain pedal, like a piano). \u00a0It\u2019s easy to \u201cfake it\u201d and still play with the masses. \u00a0Did grandma tell you that music doesn\u2019t run in the family and you\u2019re tone deaf anyway. \u00a0Well I say who cares.<\/em> \u00a0Collective effervescence is there for you too. \u00a0Just show up.<\/p>\n
