Come here quick! YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS.\u201d My husband is shouting\u00a0from the other room.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment I\u2019m peeing. I AM p-e-e-e-e-e-ing. So thank you very much. And as far as I\u2019m concerned, whatever\u00a0<em>it is<\/em>, can wait\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m not the picture of open-heartedness when I finally appear and turn my gaze toward the television set where my husband is pointing. \u201cThe banjo player,\u201d he exclaims, \u201clook at his left hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First of all, I see a bluegrass band. Monster musicians, they are. Guitar, fiddle, mandolin, piano, upright bass. The banjo player is hot!<\/p>\n<p>Wait a minute\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I lean into the T.V. for a closer look, so close I feel the heat emanating from the screen. The guy has a thumb and part of an index finger. That\u2019s it for fingers. The rest are nubs, like little toes. But his left hand moves across the neck of the banjo in this crazy beautiful dance.<\/p>\n<p>His name is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zx10KDFTgMQ\" target=\"_blank\">Barry Abernathy<\/a>\u00a0and he has found a wondrous, unorthodox way to position his left hand so he can play. A quick Google search reveals that he gravitated towards players in his bluegrass neighborhood, asked them to show him a lick, then he figured out how to play it.<\/p>\n<p><em>His<\/em>\u00a0way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1511\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 429px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1511 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/barryabernathy.jpg\" alt=\"barryabernathy\" width=\"429\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/barryabernathy.jpg 429w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/barryabernathy-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Barry Abernathy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then there\u2019s gypsy jazz guitarist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Django_Reinhardt\" target=\"_blank\">Django Reinhardt<\/a>. His whole life changed when he was 18 years old and severely burned in a fire. The doctors said he would never play guitar again. But he developed a unique style, using the two good fingers on his right hand and the scarred ones on his left. His right arm was crushed and it was bad, bad, bad. The doctors wanted to amputate. But they set the arm instead, at a permanent 90 degree angle, so he could still strum the guitar. It took him two years to recover AND\u00a0adapt. But he did. And he continued to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NkGf1GHAxhE\" target=\"_blank\">perform<\/a>\u00a0well into &#8220;elderhood.&#8221; And invent cool stuff like multi-track recording and the iconic Gibson Les Paul Guitar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1513\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 220px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1513\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/lespaul.jpg\" alt=\"Les Paul performing in 2004\" width=\"220\" height=\"285\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Les Paul performing in 2004<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of our CC Strummers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tx662eRyJZE\" target=\"_blank\">Betty Bryant<\/a>, is a renowned jazz pianist and singer. She has made a living playing, recording and touring. With\u00a0<em>nine<\/em>\u00a0good fingers\u2026<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1514\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 201px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1514 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/betty.jpeg\" alt=\"betty\" width=\"201\" height=\"251\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Betty Bryant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In my ukulele classes we do hand exercises. This little act of rubbing and stretching is a reminder that our body parts matter. They are precious. The exercises encourage me to get out of my head,\u00a0<em>where I usually live<\/em>, and check in with my fingers and hands, my back and front, top and bottom. Yes that means accepting the truth that our bodies get tired, hurt, stiff, worn-out and out-of-whack, in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p>But we find a way. That\u2019s all.
