“Blogland” has been a distant star for me the last couple of months.\u00a0 That’s what happens when you sink into the abyss of “overwhelm.”\u00a0 Like many of us, I feel like the guy who appeared on the old Ed Sullivan show keeping all those plates spinning in the air.\u00a0 When one begins to wobble and head south this desperate man rushes to the rescue, only to be distracted by a new wobbler at the end of the row.<\/p>\n
I love my life and what I do and the glorious people I get to hang out with day after day.\u00a0 I say “yes” because “yes” means\u00a0life\u00a0to me.\u00a0 But too much of a good thing is not a good thing.<\/p>\n
The flu caught me around Thanksgiving and just this week, the first week in February, gave up its buggy grip.\u00a0 That’s a long run and through the busy holidays too.\u00a0 I show up for my gigs in December, all thirty of them.\u00a0 “Charm rather than perfection” comes in handy when your voice sounds like car tires over gravel.\u00a0 I don’t have enough\u00a0oomph\u00a0leftover to open the snail mail, or email, or check in on Facebook like the all-purpose entrepreneur I am\u00a0supposed to be.\u00a0 Or return the phone calls from my family\u00a0and friends.<\/p>\n
What I do is Sudoku.\u00a0 At night as I lay next to my sleeping husband, I pull the bedspread over my head, perch the tiny LED flashlight under my chin and chip away at the daily Sudoku I clip from the The Los Angeles Times every morning.\u00a0 Once in a while I defeat the “diabolical” ones but mostly feel defeated by the “gentle” puzzles.\u00a0 Whatever the outcome, it doesn’t matter because just doing it is my sinful delight.\u00a0 It’s an\u00a0easy\u00a0distraction.\u00a0 Plus all that brain activity inexplicably puts me to sleep.\u00a0 Apparently irony is alive and well around here.<\/p>\n
So today I’m still spinning the plates but at least I am feeling better. And I’m realizing it’s time to delegate, to hand over some plates to someone else even though I am insanely fond of “doing-doing-doing,” whatever that “doing” is. I even love making lists of “things to do.” Surprise, surprise…<\/p>\n
The problem is there are only twenty-four hours in a day and this time, next century, none of us will be here.\u00a0 So how do we work joyfully?\u00a0 And smart?<\/p>\n
