My husband Craig and I are heading over to the armory-size San Ash Music Store where we are scheduled to perform, teach a clinic and jam with the Indy Ukers. We settle into the \u201cacoustic room\u201d where the walls are festooned with ukuleles, guitars, banjos, mandolins. Standing sentry, they are, strings vibrating, ever so slightly as we begin to play.<\/div>\n<div id=\"anonymous_element_47\">\n<p>We\u2019re going to have a \u201cKanikapila\u201d I cheerfully announce to this warm group of ukulele lovers. \u201cA what\u201d? They say. Alas Hawaii meets Indianapolis!<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_373\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 220px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/blythesamash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-373\" title=\"blythesamash\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/blythesamash-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Blythe, my cello-playing cousin, goes all ukulele!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kanikapila: Let\u2019s make music together.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering is even sweeter because my family of classical musicians join the party. \u201cSee which one calls to you.\u201d I implore them choose a pretty uke from the wall, press it into their arms like a baby and begin to strum.<\/p>\n<p>This is not easy for my family of violin players. Yeah there are four strings on both instruments, but the similarities end there. I grew up playing the guitar, then ukulele, and can\u2019t imagine playing an instrument without frets, which are the slats on the neck that change the pitch of the strings. But the frets on the ukulele are driving my \u201cfretless\u201d family crazy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_374\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 225px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/anthonysamash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-374 \" title=\"anthonysamash\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/anthonysamash-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">The next generation, Cousin Anthony, trumpet and piano player, goes all banjo-ukulele.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My cousin Noelle wonders if she can re-tune a ukulele like her violin. But violins have a five-octave range. Huge!!!! Ukuleles are pushing two plus. Small!!! The tunings are not interchangeable. But my family jumps in anyway. With joy and gusto! And for a little while these master musicians leave Mozart behind and get down and funky with \u201cLet\u2019s Twist Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is a wonderful thing to behold. Oh my, we just found each other and now we have to say goodbye. It sucks.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to Google and Facebook, we connected in the first place. After decades of \u201cnot knowing.\u201d What are the chances? And we won\u2019t lose each other again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"anonymous_element_150\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>P.S. In the second blog of this series, I wrote about stumbling through my new arrangement of \u201cDueling Banjos\u201d in front of the musical family. Back to the woodshed for me. Practice, practice, practice.
