This is Space Shuttle Endeavour\u2019s last hurrah before she grabs the big room at her new retirement home. The California Science Center near downtown Los Angeles. Like thousands of others, I seek higher ground to snag a view of this miraculous machine, riding piggy-back on a great big 747.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->But this is not my first close encounter with a space shuttle. My father was an aeronautics engineer and a fabulous writer. He signed on with NASA shortly after the Russians sent freak-out waves through the Pentagon when they launched the first satellite into space. Sputnik. The space race was on and my father worked in \u201cpublic relations.\u201d To the best of my knowledge that meant he translated techno-space lingo into\u2026well\u2026English. He was also privy to national secrets. I\u2019d climb on his lap, bat my big eye lashes and say \u201cdaddy, tell me a secret.\u201d He\u2019d laugh, \u201cbut then I would have to kill you. Ha Ha Ha.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_556\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 200px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/able-baker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-556\" title=\"able-baker\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/able-baker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Able and Baker on the cover of Life Magazine, June 1959.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My father\u2019s claim to NASA fame was that he\u00a0<em>named<\/em>\u00a0the first two monkeys that went into space. And came back. Alive. According to the directive, one name had to start with an \u201cA\u201d and the other a \u201cB.\u201d The in-laws lobbied him to name the monkeys after them. That would be\u00a0<em>Abraham<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Bernice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>When you see the pictures of little Able and Baker, now you know the\u00a0<em>back story<\/em>. In fact the in-laws were so pissed off about the name thing (I mean get over it folks\u2026) my father threw up his hands in frustration and moved my mother and me to the other side of the country. Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Aerospace was hot in the land of sunshine and my father thrived. He was here for Gemini, Apollo and the Space Shuttles. That\u2019s when we begin our years-long ritual, my daddy and I. In the middle of night, we drive a couple hours northeast to the Mojave Desert, Edwards Air Force Base, and watch the Shuttle land.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_557\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sunset.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-557\" title=\"sunset\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sunset-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Another beautiful desert sunrise. Another beautiful shuttle landing at Edwards. We get plenty lucky with this photo!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Because my father was in the press corps, we get up close and personal with hardware and staff. First you hear the double sonic booms, then off in the distance you see a small dot in the sky that grows bigger and takes the shape of a bird. Suddenly it\u2019s the Shuttle, gliding earthward at break-neck speed. There is desert silence when it lands and passes us in a\u00a0<em>whoosh<\/em>\u00a0as the parachutes deploy behind.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_558\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/shuttle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-558\" title=\"shuttle\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/shuttle-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Space-age vehicles at the ready as the astronauts wait patiently to get the hell off&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then the dusty thing sits on the tarmac for a few moments before it is quickly surrounded by an assortment of specialized sniffer vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/desert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-559\" title=\"desert\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/desert-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>At that point my father goes to the pressroom for the flight debriefing and I wander into the gift shop to buy the latest shuttle t-shirt. Ever. A Xenon light, as bright as a mini-sun, beckons the shuttle toward the runway. All the other lights at Edwards are turned off and the press and visitors are given green glow wands to wave (and light the way to the bathroom, I presume). It\u2019s eerie and magical. Fast forward two and half years. It\u2019s a Tuesday morning in January, 1986. My father calls me on the phone, emotion slicing through his voice, \u201cturn on the television, Cali,\u00a0<em>we<\/em>\u00a0lost Challenger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was\u00a0<em>our<\/em>\u00a0Challenger. They were\u00a0<em>our<\/em>\u00a0astronauts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_561\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/napinvolvo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-561 \" title=\"napinvolvo\" src=\"http:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/napinvolvo-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Busted! My father catches me taking a nap before the shuttle lands&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My father watched Endeavour\u2019s early flights from home. By now he was too ill to take any middle-of-the-night sojourns to the high desert. These and other memories come flooding back as I watch Endeavour circle the city. I remember my daddy, the \u201cspace thing\u201d we loved, the time we spent together, looking up. I\u2019m grateful to him for bringing me to Los Angeles.
