I can smell \u201cwinter\u201d in the air, here in SoCal.\u00a0 The cool breezes push through the light sweaters I wear.\u00a0 Today it\u2019s actually drizzling a little and since Mother Earth rotates on an axis, it\u2019s getting positively night-like in the late afternoon. \u00a0A whole lot darker than last month.<\/p>\n

Basket weave blanket. All cozy, warm, 100% acrylic and crocheted with love…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

That means its time to haul out the extra blankets.\u00a0 My husband Craig<\/a>\u00a0\u201cooo\u2019s\u201d and \u201caah\u2019s\u201d every year as I lay his<\/em> across his<\/em> side of the bed.\u00a0 I crocheted it.\u00a0 Just for him.\u00a0 The basket weave pattern I used is dense and thick and I found myself making trip after trip to Michaels, the hobby-heaven box store, to buy more skeins of tan and brown and creme-colored 4-ply acrylic yarn. \u00a0After a while I didn\u2019t care if the \u201clot numbers\u201d matched or not.\u00a0 Close<\/em> enough, was good<\/em> enough. \u00a0Winter passed, then spring before it was all done.<\/p>\n

Years later, the thing is still alive and has survived countless whirls through the washing machine and dryer.\u00a0 Because our dining room table happens to be our bed, the basket weave blanket doubles as a \u201ctable cloth\u201d and has weathered every conceivable dinner combination I can dream up.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m not exaggerating when I tell you it is a bonifide member of the family.<\/p>\n

As I am arranging it nicely across the bed, I wonder, out loud even<\/em>, how the hell did I have the time to crochet a fricking blanket?\u00a0 When was<\/em> that?\u00a0 It seems a dream or two ago.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t picked up a crochet hook for ages and today I am keeping so many plates spinning in the air that if a few moments of free time float into the day, I take a nap. \u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m getting good at sleeping sitting up. \u00a0Last week I parked outside the local stationery store but the afternoon radio show on KCRW<\/a> (it was Joe Frank<\/a>\u2026if you\u2019re interested) delayed my trip inside.\u00a0 I love Joe\u2019s dark and witty stuff and am really getting into it, right?\u00a0 Until I fall asleep.\u00a0 With my seat belt on.\u00a0 In the customer parking lot.<\/p>\n

So on that note, I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Even if you are someone who happens to sleep through the holiday.\u00a0 Here\u2019s my personal take on the whole thing:\u00a0 Everyday should be T-Day!\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful that I woke up this morning.\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful for the cooler weather and the \u201cshorter\u201d days.\u00a0 For homemade blankets.\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful to have a full and busy life, even if I\u2019m exhausted and I\u2019m grateful for ten-minute naps.\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful for the precious people who turn everyday into some kind of Technicolor adventure\u2014be it drama, comedy or mayhem.<\/p>\n
