\"\"<\/a>My relationship with time<\/em> has always been a little wobbly but since the pandemic, wobbles have turned into free-falls and bumpy rides through the land of \u201cwhat is time anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n

This is my way of saying I don\u2019t remember when<\/em> \u201cthat morning\u201d happened. Was it spring, summer, fall, winter? I don\u2019t know. But it\u2019s easy to flash back to the moment.<\/p>\n

There he is, one of our CC Strummers, a big teddy bear of a guy, gripping a giant coffee in one hand and his ukulele in the other. You can\u2019t miss his mischievous Cheshire Cat smile because it kind of lights up the room.<\/p>\n

Then he speaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cCali, something wonderful happened to me this morning.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Pause\u2026pause\u2026pause\u2026 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>He leaves me dangling over the edge of this conversational cliff as I mentally scroll through the possibilities here.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, okay\u2026so what happened?\u201d I finally ask.<\/p>\n

\u201cI WOKE UP!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well I hear this and burst into laughter, like snorting kind of laughter. (I thought he was going to say he got laid\u2026)<\/em><\/p>\n

Please tell me how do we miss \u201cthe obvious?\u201d That of course\u2026we woke up this morning. But it doesn\u2019t take long for my ha-ha-ha\u00a0<\/em>to level out and kerplop<\/em> into the mortality thing.<\/em>That IF we have the good fortune to wake up one more day, the rest is gravy. That we are renters in this apartment building of life and sooner or later we have to turn in the key.\u00a0 So being here NOW is a pretty big deal.<\/p>\n

These little flashes of whooo-whooo<\/em> happen once in a while and I try to capture them for keepsies. When I was a kid growing up in Washington D.C. I loved to catch lighting bugs and slide them into an empty mayonnaise jar. My father used a screwdriver to poke air holes in the cap so they could breathe. The next morning I woke up. The bugs did not.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s taken a long time for that lesson to sink in. Once a flesh and blood moment of “aha” is snared in a net of words, well\u2026poof<\/em>. \u00a0It loses it’s electrical charge. \u00a0I still scribble in my journal anyway because I can\u2019t help myself. But in this case, I decided to write that waking up thing<\/em>\u00a0into a song so I would remember. \u00a0Really remember.<\/em> \u00a0 And that\u2019s how “This Morning Something Wonderful Happened to Me (I Woke Up)” came about.<\/p>\n

When I started performing my song at gigs I noticed something very interesting. Other people had the same reaction that I did when I first heard the words. They laughed, like \u201coh yeah\u2026right…\u201d And then they didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

But now they sing along. Every time. With joy! \u00a0Who can ask for more?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>It\u2019s the yin and yang<\/a> of life, made visible. A little darkness in light; a little light in darkness. \u201cAnd maybe all is well, even when it is not.\u201d (Yep, I wrote that into the song).<\/p>\n
