I thought they were kidding. They weren\u2019t kidding nor were they laughing as hard as I was\u2026 Nevertheless, they broadcast <em>Pomp and Circumstances<\/em> through the sound system, handed me a certificate and parting gifts, including a Bruin-blue cardiac graduate tee-shirt.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7403 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a>But the best swag came at the end of my session when I slapped my big bare feet on the magic machine that measures everything that\u2019s happening in my body. <em>The good, the gooder, the OMG.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I took this same test my first day of rehab. They handed me paddles with electric sensors which I grasped tightly in my hands. I stood motionless, like a scared statue, as the machine went <em>buzzzzzzzzzz<\/em>. It was one minute of \u201cwhat the hell is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Well I soon found out, as they presented me with the computer readout &#8212; a cascade of numbers indicating what\u2019s happening \u201cdown there.\u201d A friend once said: \u201cMy brain would have killed my body years ago if I didn\u2019t need it for transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Would you like to know how much fat is in your right arm? How about the amount of muscle mass in your left leg? Water in your trunk? (28 pounds for me).<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">It all looked like gibberish, but on graduation day when I took the test again, the improvement was stunning. Even the staff was over the moon. I lost fat, gained significant muscle, and exclaimed to myself \u201choly sh_t, this stuff works!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7404\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 225px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7404 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-2-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-2-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-2.jpeg 481w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Treadmills, circa 1920&#8217;s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"left\">How did I get here?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Well, for three months, two times a week, I arrive at 6 <em>effing<\/em> 30 in the morning, step on the scale by the front desk, announce my weight for all to hear, because that\u2019s what we do, help the nurse attach the ECG leads to my chest, and receive instructions from the drill sergeant, <em>er<\/em>, Steve. I glide into a cardio routine for the next 45 minutes \u2014 the NuStep recumbent bike, the treadmill and what I call the <em>arm-whirligig-from-hell. \u00a0<\/em>It\u2019s like a bicycle for arms. If I never see this machine again it will be too soon.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7405 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a>All through the workout, the nurses are checking my blood pressure and asking me to assess how pooped I am (my words) on the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale. The right way. When to breathe in, when to breathe out and how to focus on specific muscle groups. My blood pressure was okay, the ECG normal. The exercise physiologist and I suspect this is a musculoskeletal thing and not related to my heart.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">He mentions that his wife, who plays viola, has been practicing mightily to get her chops back, post pandemic and\u2026<em>wouldn\u2019t you know<\/em>\u2026getting chest pain. I\u2019m not proud to admit that it hadn\u2019t occurred to me that some of my upper body discomfort is from playing a musical instrument, albeit a small one, and this focused physical activity includes repetition and postural adjustments. What a relief to know what I\u2019m dealing with.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-5.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7408\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-5-300x122.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-5-300x122.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-5-1024x417.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-5-768x313.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-5.jpeg 1180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Then he tells me about <a href=\"https:\/\/email.cloud.secureclick.net\/c\/1699?id=9002.17085.1.03442c3604b68d4034efd3a9523e7a5d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trigger points.<\/a> <em>Like what\u2026?\u00a0<\/em>Apparently there are points on our bodies that are like conduits of energy and manipulating these spots can help relieve tension in different muscle groups. He has me order a couple lacrosse balls on Amazon. The first time I lay my upper butt on a ball and hit that point &#8212; <em>Zap! Pow! Bam!<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">But after a few seconds of pressure, I can feel my muscles relax, like they are saying \u201cthank you\u2026thank you.\u201d I am absolutely stunned!<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">So now I do my trigger ball regime almost every morning. Butt, back, upper chest. Who would have thought that cardiac rehab would open an expressway between my head and body.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-6.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7409\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-6-300x239.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-6-300x239.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-6-1024x817.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-6-768x613.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-6.jpeg 1180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In lieu of the fancy cardio machines, I trundle daily around my condo community for a whopping thirty-minutes and encounter all kinds of wildlife (crows, ducks, lizards, rabbits) that I know aren\u2019t paying the monthly assessment fees. Mr\/Ms Squirrel reminds me to hydrate, although not quite THIS way\u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-8.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7412 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-8-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-8-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-8-272x182.jpeg 272w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-8.jpeg 509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The heart! This fist-sized miracle machine weighs all of 7 to 15 ounces and beats over 100,000 times a day. Let me say that again. ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND TIMES A DAY. In one year your heart, my heart, will pump enough blood to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In all honesty, before all this happened I barely gave my heart a passing <em>how-dee-do<\/em> except to refer to it as my built-in drum machine. But I\u2019m alive today, you\u2019re alive today because our hearts are beating. It\u2019s kind of that simple.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">And this bears repeating &#8212; how that Friday morning last March unraveled. As I was sipping a cup of tea and cleaning my computer keyboard I suddenly felt a knot in my throat, a little achy pain in my neck and jaw. Then it spread to my arms and chest. When I stood up, a wave of nausea rolled over me and I was feeling just a wee bit winded. I tried to talk myself out of it: \u201cThis is a panic attack. I got gigs today. People are depending on me to show up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-7.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7411\" src=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-7-210x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-7-210x300.jpeg 210w, https:\/\/calirose.com\/wackyworld\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/image-7.jpeg 564w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">How I crossed the threshold between denial and acceptance SO FAST I\u2019ll never know but within an hour and a half I was in the emergency room at UCLA. Having a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. <a href=\"https:\/\/email.cloud.secureclick.net\/c\/1699?id=9002.17086.1.2c2983480457cbd35451dad6454ba1dd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My symptoms were mild.<\/a> I was not clutching my chest in pain nor gasping for breath. But something was wrong and I knew it. Since that day I have heard stories of women who had similar symptoms, women who waited too long to get help.
