What we’ll learn

We start at the very beginning! How to hold your uke, tuning, chords, strums, songs, how to create a “groove” and more. You will be playing your ukulele and singing along the first day! This workshop is about making music and having fun in a warm and supportive atmosphere. No previous musical experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome, 16 years old and above.

What you’ll need

  • Short fingernails on your left hand.
  • A ukulele with standard G-C-E-A tuning. Your instrument must be in playable condition, which means the tuning pegs work (they don’t slip) and the strings are relatively new. Ukes come in three sizes: soprano, concert & tenor. I recommend the larger sizes, concert and tenor, because they are easier to play. Try a few ukes at Boulevard Music and find one that feels right to you.
  • A digital tuner, preferably one that is calibrated for ukulele tuning and clips onto the ukulele headstock. Check out the Kala KC02 Clip-On Tuner and others on the market.
  • A great big smile.

Later on, please purchase:

  • “The Daily Ukulele, 365 Songs for Better Living” compiled by Jim and Liz Beloff and published by Hal Leonard. This book contains hundreds of uke-friendly songs and arrangements, chord charts and a Ukulele 101 Primer for beginners, along with handy tricks and tips for all players. It’s the most comprehensive ukulele book available today.
