On Websites and Plumbing Fixtures

Hi Everybody!

Amy and I… Well Amy… She has been hard at work re-creating my website, my shiny Are We Having Fun Yet?new billboard in the sky. In an earlier blog I wrote about the challenges I have delegating the various tasks of my life to other people and I was holding onto my website with every grippy joint of my body because I love putting the thing together. I love tweaking it in the middle of the night and feeling that delirious feeling when I push the “publish button” and suddenly a new picture or sentence appears. Like magic.

But I finally handed over the reins to someone who knows graphic-goo, talks techno-talk and possesses the artistic aesthetic to channel my “groove thing” into a website that is fun and pleasing to look at.

It’s Live! That means, it’s here folks! Amy has given me several nooks and crannies on the website I can still mess with from my computer. It’s like she built me a really cool playground. Surrounded by a very tall fence. And a watchtower.

Now that’s a professional. Amy Pace grew up and lives in Kohler, Wisconsin. She works kohler wisconsin mapwith clients all over the map. But home is home. This year is their Centennial Celebration. She is currently working on a commemorative book that recounts the history of this village that grew up around the Kohler Company, the people who manufacture what is most essential in the bathroom. Interviewing townsfolk and transcribing their stories has sent her time machine in reverse too.

When she was a little girl, everyone in town walked. It was a big deal to see a car drive by. Shift change at Kohler was the highlight of the day because the workers walked past her house and waved.

I imagine we all have a treasured memory from way back when. Some simple little thing. Dusted in magic. I remember waiting my turn for the rope swing, the one that was hidden inside a tiny wedge of controlled wilderness in Washington D.C. We kids weren’t supposed to be there, or swinging. But we were there. Boldly ignoring parental edicts and flying past the branches of those fine oak trees. It was thrilling.

Amy and I have another deep connection besides all this website stuff. The toilet in my Culver City condo, it’s a Kohler. I emailed her the exciting news and she replied that now I will think of her every time I pee. Well maybe. But I do think of her every time I see my new home page turn the computer screen hot pink and green…
